GAM - Saami meets India
Remote video workshops for kindergartens

Namaste is a Dance theatre concept developed by choreographer Marja Merisalo especially for schoolchildren of ages ranging from 7 up to teenagers. The idea is that professional artists work together with a group of schoolchildren through a full rehearsal period where children experience the complete creative process of staging a full fledged dance theatre performance on a theatre stage. Namaste dance theater projects spice up their end product with a dash of Indian curry, where Indian mythologies and characters are woven seamlessly into European and Finnish traditions.

Taketum is a series of live school workshops, where schoolchildren of many ages can take part and have fun learning about music, dance, rhythm and theatre games.

The idea is to teach multicultural understanding and  artistic expression in a broad and enjoyable way.

Taketum has done e.g. village school tours in Finland and visits any schools on request.

In February 2023 choreographer Marja Merisalo is directed a dance theatre performance in Finnish Lapland and North Norway.

The Saami children from Utsjoki and Tana (Ohcejohka and Deatnu) are performing a story written by Marja Merisalo and Carl-Johan Häggman where two mythologies, the Saami and the Indian met on stage in North Norway.

The performances were held in the Miljöbygget scene in Tana bru (Deanu šaldi)

in may 2023.

A fusion concert "Saami Meets India" together with the Finnish joik singer Ulla Pirttijärvi and the Bengali singer Peali Mitra Juva was staged on Sajos cultural centre in Inari, Finland.

The GAM -project has received funding from The Finnish Cultural Foundation, The Alli Paasikivi Foundation and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Ilmatar is the mythological daughter of air from the Finnish epic Kalevala. Ilmatar brings children to a journey full of adventure and surprises through the landscapes and the rich culture of the region of Karelia. The workshops have been active since 2020 and have been very popular among kindergarten children. The project is going on mainly in Espoo, Finland but is visiting also various other Finnish cities. The workshop is also available as a live version.
